Dr Fritz Balkau videoVoiceover: "For more than 30 years Dr Fritz Balkau has worked to protect our environment. "Dr Balkau first graduated from Monash University in 1968 with a Bachelor of Science with Honours. He completed his PhD in 1972 and followed with a Diploma of Education." Fritz Balkau: "The experience of studying and working and engaging in other activities at Monash has really been a strong influence on my life. It’s given me the confidence and also the skills to be able to work in many different areas and also to contribute to program development and professional activities at a global level." Voiceover: "Over his career Dr Balkau held senior positions with Victoria’s Environment Protection Authority, at the OECD and with the United Nations Environment Program in Paris." Fritz Balkau: "My role within the United Nations Environment Programme was to lead a small team to encourage the world to adopt more preventative approaches to environmental management. Looking at the root causes of environmental impact and addressing that through systematic changes in approaches, management systems and technologies. Rather than dealing with the problems of environmental contamination after it has occurred." Voiceover: "The focus of Dr Balkau’s work has been preventing environmental hazards and minimising the impact of industry on the environment." Fritz Balkau: "The consulting work I’m still doing is looking more at better ways of solving environmental problems that we’ve had in the past. "This means really looking at the lifecycle of materials and products and identifying the most effective place to make a change." Voiceover: "Monash University commends Dr Fritz Balkau for his outstanding career and tireless work for our environment."
