Dewi Fortuna Anwar is a leading academic, researcher and political analyst. During the administration of President Habibie of Indonesia, she served as Assistant to the Vice President for Global Affairs and Assistant Minister/State Secretary for Foreign Affairs.

Professor Anwar currently holds leadership positions with independent think tank The Habibie Center and The Indonesian Institute of Sciences in Jakarta, Indonesia. She is also a board member of international bodies including the UN Secretary General’s Advisory Board on Disarmament Matters.

Professor Anwar’s nominator, Professor Greg Barton (BA(Hons) 1988, PhD 1996), describes her as having “a towering reputation without equal amongst her peers” who “enjoys the respect and affection of all who have worked with her in Indonesia and around the world, both because of her sparkling intellect, her well informed scholarship and because of her integrity and remarkable character.”

In supporting Professor Anwar’s nomination, Governor of the National Resilience Institute, Professor Muladi writes: “During the long era of President Soeharto, Professor Anwar spoke out about the need for political and social change. This was a courageous action that inspired others. Following the fall of Soeharto, she played an active role in helping our country move towards democracy. She was prepared to be involved, not merely comment from the safety of academia. Professor Dewi Fortuna Anwar is indeed one of Indonesia’s most prominent and influential women.”
