Coordinator of air transport programs at the International Civil Aviation Organisation Ruwantissa Abeyratne (LLM 1982) has published his latest book, Air Law and Policy (PublishAmerica Inc, 2007). Written for his graduate students at the John Molson School of Business, the book examines aviation issues including sovereignty in air space, the status and functions of civil and state aircraft, competition in air transport and security trends.
Unkind Cut (Buxton Books, 2007 c/- an imprint of www.goldiealexander.com) is one of several books written by Goldie Alexander (BA 1975). The book is a murder mystery and the sequel to Goldie’s 2003 novel UnJust Desserts which was the first of this sub-genre published in Australia. As well as providing some delicious recipes, Unkind Cut shows what can happen in a small Australian town when ordinary folk mix with the rich and famous.
Writer and consultant Geoff Arnott (BEc 1970, DipEd 1971, BEd 1974) has written his 12th publication: Working in Community Services. The book is a useful guide for students and others wanting to pursue a career in Community Services. It focuses on two major aspects of community service – communication and teamwork – and includes information on laws and standards that apply to this sector.
Penny Burke (BBus(Mktg) 1991) has written Forced Focus: The Essence of Attracting and Retaining the Best People (Messenger Publishing, 2007). The book examines the impact that a skills shortage and generation Y employees have on the workplace today. It outlines some practical steps that employers can take to improve workplace culture in order to attract and retain the best talent.
Angela Crocombe (BEc 1992, BLitt(Hons) 1995) has released A Lighter Footprint (Scribe Publications, 2007). The book is a practical guide on how Australians can minimise greenhouse gas emissions and reduce their impact on the planet.
Billy Curry (BBus(Mktg) 2003) has written Unlonely Planet (Thinking Publishing, 2006), a novel which features himself as the main character taking part in a nine-month around-the-world adventure. Billy’s activities range from hiking in the Himalayas to staying on a prince’s yacht in the Mediterranean.
Gillian Hibbins (DipEd 1973, MA 1984) is the author of a new book titled Sport and Racing in Colonial Melbourne (Lynedoch Publications, 2007). The book explores the history of sports that became popular in Melbourne between the 1850s and 1880s including cricket, Australian Rules football, rugby, athletics, rowing and horse-racing.
Director of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Monash University, Professor Gabor Kovacs AM (MBBS 1971, MD 1995) is co-editor of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (2nd ed.) (Cambridge University Press, 2007). The book is a useful reference text for clinicians with an interest in reproductive endocrinology. It gives readers a thorough update on the syndrome, its causes, origin, impact on infertility and effective medical management.
Virginia Lowe (BA(Hons) 1987, MA 1988, PhD 1997) has released Stories, Pictures and Reality: Two Children Tell (Routledge, 2007), which studies the responses of two children to books. The longitudinal study shows that children have more insight and understanding than they are given credit for and that they approach subjects that puzzle the most sophisticated of thinkers.
Poet Ian Smith (BA 1980, DipEd 1981) has published his third book, a collection of poetry, titled Memory Like Hunger (Ginninderra Press, 2006). This title follows previous publications These Fugitive Days and This is Serious.
Martien Snellen (MBBS 1987, MPM 1997) has written Sex and Intimacy after Childbirth (Text Publishing, 2005). His book explores the factors that can influence and inhibit the sexual relationships of new parents — from changes in body image to health issues such as postnatal depression. It offers practical suggestions for rethinking relationships and rediscovering physical intimacy.
Risk management expert Ian Tho (MBA 1992) has written a book about the management of risks that confront buyers and suppliers involved in outsourcing agreements. Managing the Risks of IT Outsourcing (Elsevier Butterworth-Heinemann, 2005) also explores current and emerging trends in managing the unique interchange between buyers and suppliers.
Founder and CEO of Malaysian financial consulting business Abacus For Money, Carol Yip (BEc(Hons) 1988) has released a new book titled Smart Money-User (Kanyin Publications, 2006). The book is a practical money guide, designed to teach young adults how to better manage their money. It also includes exercise worksheets for young adults to get hands-on experience. |
