English language requirements

For entry to Monash University, you must meet the minimum English language requirements. You can do this by meeting one of the qualifications listed. Some courses have higher English language requirements than those listed here. Check the course requirements in Course Finder.

Time limit: If your secondary schooling was not entirely in English, you must have received any result or qualification, within two years of your intended course commencement at Monash. If the qualification is a bachelor's degree (or equivalent) you must start your course within five years.

Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or final year high school

Successful completion of a final year high school qualification, with:

  • English as a Second Language (ESL): Minimum score of 30
  • Units 3 and 4 in any other English subject: Minimum score of 25

Tertiary and post-secondary studies

Study at an institution where English is the language of instruction and assessment for the entire institution. You need to provide evidence in the form of a letter or transcript from the institution.

Satisfactory completion of one year, full-time study (two standard full-time semesters) of one of these programs:

  • undergraduate or postgraduate study
  • a TAFE or VET diploma
  • a program assessed as being equivalent to Monash University undergraduate study

Satisfactory completion of one and half years full-time (three standard full-time semesters) of one of these programs:

  • undergraduate study
  • a program assessed as being equivalent to Monash University undergraduate study

or one year, full-time (two standard full-time semesters) of postgraduate study.

English language proficiency test

Some courses have higher score requirements for the English language proficiency tests listed below. Course Finder has this information listed in individual course entries.

Your application must include one original test report meeting the minimum results listed below:

Proficiency (CPE): 45 or above (each skill must score weak or above)
or
Advanced (CAE): 58 or above (each skill must score borderline or above)

Higher education units (for undergraduate entry only)

Study at an institution where English is the language of instruction and assessment for the entire institution, with:

  • satisfactory completion of two units
  • one of which is English-rich (at least half the assessment tasks require high use of English such as essays, reports, presentations rather than maths, formulas or programming languages).

Non-award courses

Successful completion of secondary schooling in English
and
successful completion of one of the following Monash University qualifications, with a minimum of 24 credit points of postgraduate level units:

  • faculty certificate
  • faculty diploma
  • executive certificate
  • executive diploma.

Monash University English Language Centre (MUELC)

Successful completion of the Monash University English Language Bridging Program or equivalent.
