Student Tutors Required

The Schools Access Monash (SAM) program provides a range of activities for a select number of schools to increase students’ awareness of universities and courses available and to help students reach their academic potential. Schools involved in the program are:

  • Cranbourne Secondary College (Cranbourne)*
  • Mount Erin College (Frankston)*
  • Dromana Secondary College (Dromana)*
  • Rosebud Secondary College (Rosebud)**
  • Hampton Park Secondary College (Hampton Park)**
  • Sandringham College (Sandringham)
  • Hawthorn Secondary College (Hawthorn)
  • Traralgon College (Traralgon)**
  • Kurnai College (Churchill, Gippsland)*
  • Western Port Secondary College (Hastings)**
  • Lowanna College (Newborough, Gippsland)**

SAM is seeking current Monash students to provide support to the program as tutors for students studying VCE Units 3 & 4 at the above schools. In 2010, positions are available at schools marked with an “*” or “**”.

Whilst tutors are required for Year 12 students with high potential in a range of VCE subjects, preference will be given to applicants who are willing to tutor in 2 or more of Math Methods, Specialist Maths, Physics, Chemistry and English. Preference will also be given to students willing to tutor at schools marked with an ‘**’.

Tutoring is expected to commence at schools in the week beginning 12th April 2010. (The beginning of school Term 2.) Hours will be negotiated with successful candidates, although students are reminded that tutoring work is ad hoc and regular hours cannot be guaranteed. Successful applicants will be required to attend a two hour compulsory tutor training session on either Friday 5th March at Monash Gippsland (10.30am-12.30pm) or Thursday 11th March at Monash Clayton (2pm-4pm). Please note this training session covers how to be a good tutor. Training is not provided in VCE subjects and applicants need to be confident in subject areas prior to applying. Students will also be required to visit their allocated school for a tutor induction session (approx. 1 hour) between15th March – 26th March and will be paid for both the training and induction sessions.

All tutoring will be held on school premises and it would be advantageous to have some experience in tutoring or a similar area.
