Access Monash Ambassadors
|
Access Monash is looking for Monash students to support our work with school students through the Schools Access Monash (SAM) program, including the new Gateway Scholars initiative. SAM works with schools with a significant number of students from disadvantaged backgrounds or low rates of progression to university study.
School students find it extremely valuable to be given the chance to interact with university students like you – young people who have been in their shoes and have progressed to university. We are looking for volunteers to work as general Ambassadors at various events and activities, but are also recruiting to the paid roles of Mentors and Tutors.
We are looking for current Monash students with the following attributes:
- An enthusiasm for higher education and the ability to explain the benefits of higher education to young people
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to facilitate group work and encourage participation
- Responsible, reliable and professional
- Willingness to talk about your own educational experiences
Mentors

Mentors will be matched to students in years 11 and 12 based on fields of study and will provide specific support and advice to students relating to their course and career interests. Mentors will be expected to visit mentees in their schools throughout the year, as well as provide online e-mentoring.
This equates to approximately 30 hours of work during the academic year per mentee (mentors may be assigned to multiple mentees). Hours of work will be flexible and negotiated between mentors and mentees/schools. Mentors will be paid at the casual HEW 3 rate, which is currently $28.06 per hour. Mentors will be required to commit to at least one year, preferably two (working with the mentees through years 11 and 12). One day’s compulsory training will take place in late January 2012. Details of this training will be provided at interviews to be held in early December.
The mentor program will be offered in the following schools in 2012 and applicants will be able to nominate the school of their preference: Cranbourne S.C, Dromana S.C., Gleneagles S.C., Hampton Park S.C., Mount Erin C., Narre Warren South P-12 C., Patterson River S.C., Somerville S.C., Westall S.C., Western Port S.C.

Tutors will be paid at the casual HEW 3 rate, which is currently $28.06 per hour. Two full days' compulsory training will take place in late January. Details of training will be provided at interviews to be held in early December.
To be considered for this role, applicants must:

Ambassadors
If you would like to be involved but aren’t able to commit to the regular hours required of Tutors and Mentors, we are also recruiting a team of Ambassadors to support the Access Monash office at various events and activities, both on campus and in schools. This might involve leading a campus tour, talking about your educational experiences, answering questions from students, and general events support, so shifts can be anything from one hour to a full day.
The role of Ambassador is undertaken on a voluntary basis and is a great opportunity for you to do something different to complement your university studies – to enthuse young people about higher education – and it’ll look good on your CV too!
Application and Induction process
We are not accepting any applications at this time but may do so again the new year.
