Academic Dress Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

The Frequently Asked Questions are divided into two categories: On the day of the ceremony related questions and General Academic Dress questions.

On the day of the Ceremony

Does my graduation fee include the hire of my Academic Dress?

Yes, this is covered by the fee that you paid upon application.

Is there a deposit required when I collect my gown?

No, although there is a late fee if the gown is not returned on the day of your ceremony.

When and where can I collect my academic dress on the day?

Clayton: Collect your regalia from the West Wing Cellar Room, ground floor of the Campus Centre, building 10 at the following times.

Afternoon Ceremonies at 4.00pm: 1.00pm-3.00pm. Academic dress will not be available for collection after 3.15pm.

Evening Ceremonies at 8.00pm: 5.00pm-7.00pm. Academic dress will not be available for collection before 5.00pm or after 7.15pm.

Gippsland: From two hours prior to the ceremony. Gippsland graduands will need to present their seat allocation ticket when collecting their regalia from Room IN 206/207, at the Gippsland Campus at Churchill.

When should I return my academic dress?

Your regalia must be returned on the day of your graduation immediately after you have finalised photographic and graduation services. Non-return of academic dress incurs a replacement cost of $500.

What graduation services are available on the day?

Where will Graduation Services be located on the day?

Clayton: In the Main Dining Room, Banquet Room and the Airport Lounge on the 1st floor of the Campus Centre, building 10.

Gippsland: All the Graduation Services will be in the Knuckle.

When should I get photographs taken?

For your convenience you are encouraged to have your photographs taken before the ceremony, immediately after you are gowned. Choosing to have your photographs taken after the ceremony may result in long delays. Graduates must check in to photographers' reception desks prior to having portraits taken.

Where can I park on the day of the ceremony?

Clayton: On graduation day you can park in any designated blue car park space on the campus. Please be warned that parking in the wrong area will result in a fine. For further information contact Security and Traffic on 9905 5789.

Gippsland: On graduation day you can park in any of the car parks on the campus, but be aware of the designated yellow permit zones and disabled car spaces where parking is not permitted without a permit.

Travelling to Graduation Ceremonies?

Clayton: From Melbourne's Tullamarine International Airport, via the Monash Freeway and Blackburn Road, allow approximately 1 1/2 hours.

Gippsland: The Gippsland campus is located in the Latrobe Valley township of Churchill , about 160 kilometres southeast of Melbourne . From Melbourne ’s Tullamarine International Airport allow approximately 3 hours. Take the Monash Freeway and Princes Highway (M1) to Gippsland via Warragul. Travel to the Morwell bypass, and watch for the Monash University exit sign (4th Morwell exit off the highway). Veer left off the Princes Highway and then turn right at the traffic lights and proceed eight kilometres to Churchill along the Monash Way . Follow the signs to the university (see map 528, reference D8 in the Melways street directory) Turn left at the first roundabout in Churchill and proceed to the next roundabout then turn left or proceed ahead to the campus entry roads.

Are any food outlets open on graduation days?

All graduates and guests can enjoy light refreshments provided after the Graduation ceremonies. At Clayton Campus these will be served in the Main Dining Room situated on the first floor of the Campus Centre, building 10. Food outlets are open before and after day time ceremonies in the Campus Centre at Clayton.

For evening ceremonies, the Monash Meeting Point and the Joe's Pizzeria are open. Joe's Restaurant/Bistro is also open for lunch and/or evening meals. It is advisable to book at Joe's prior to the Graduation day.

General Questions About Academic Dress

Is casual hire of academic dress available?

Casual hire is available on other days throughout the year  No casual hire is available on graduation days. Please direct any enquiries relating to the Academic Dress Service on 9905 3146.

Can I purchase my academic dress?

Yes, please contact the Academic Dress service on 9905 3146 or email: Academic.Dress@adm.monash.edu.au.  However it is recommended that you place your order at least three weeks prior to the date of your graduation.

Is bulk hire of academic dress available?

We provide academic dress for hire to secondary and tertiary institutions and other organisations. Please be sure to arrange bookings well in advance.
