Professor Coats was born in Melbourne and studied Medicine at Oxford and Cambridge. He commenced his cardiological training at St. Vincent's Hospital, Melbourne and completed a DM at Oxford and a DSc. at Imperial College, London. Andrew was appointed the Inaugural Viscount Royston Professor of Cardiology at the National Heart and Lung Institute and Imperial College, London in 1996 and served as Director of Cardiology of the Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS trust and subsequently its Associate Medical Director (R+D). Andrew was appointed Dean of Medicine at the University of Sydney in 2002, and then as Deputy Vice-Chancellor in 2006. He most recently served as Chief Executive Officer of Norwich Research Park and Professor-at-Large at the University of East Anglia in the UK. Concurrently, he was Visiting Professor of Medicine at The University of Sydney in Australia, Consulting Professor for Research Strategy at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Guest Scientist at the Charité Medical School of Humboldt University in Berlin.

A fully accredited physician and cardiologist in both the United Kingdom and Australia, Professor Coats has also served as Chairman of the Australian Health Informatics Council.

Professor Coats has an MBA from the London Business School and has more than 30 years of boardroom experience. He is a both a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and a Member of the UK's Institute of Directors. Andrew has published more than 600 articles (including 2 theses, 15 Government reports, 10 text books, and over 485 peer-reviewed full papers. He has more than 37,000 career citations, and a personal H-index of 88. He has been Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Cardiology since 1999 and has received the Linacre Medal of the Royal College of Physicians and the inaugural Michael L Pollock award of the American Heart Association.

Professor Coats was appointed the joint academic Vice-President & Director of the alliance in September 2012.
