Our ambition

Monash is a university of progress and optimism.

We see a brighter future as more than just possible - we see it as something for which we are directly responsible; something we can help to create.

It is our role to tackle the big questions and meet the challenges the future holds - and we will do this by ensuring we are a truly excellent, international and inclusive institution.

Above all, we will do this through our education and our investigation, which is why we have an ambition to become one of the world's top research and teaching institutions. We're getting there fast but we want to make our improvement even faster.

Our people are our most valued asset. Monash academics are among the very best in the world, our professional staff are revolutionising the way we operate as an organisation and the success of our students continues to be limited only by the extent of their own imagination.

Our global footprint is the broadest of any Australian university and we will continue to engage with the world on all fronts, including research, teaching and collaborative partnerships. But we want to be more than agents of community action and development – we want to embed ourselves in the communities that we serve.

Only by doing these things can the change that we seek to effect be as relevant and powerful as we want it to be.

Monash University: The next ten years

Monash University: The next ten years (pdf 439kb) is our long-term strategic plan. It articulates where we want to be by 2022 and how we’ll get there.

The Next Ten Years lays out three goals: to be the best university within the Asia-Pacific; to be a truly global university, both physically and intellectually; and to be among the strongest research universities in the world. It also lays out six top-level strategies that we believe will enable us to realise these ambitions, from increasing our focus on Asia to revolutionising student learning to leveraging the diversity of our campuses.

Our strategy – Monash Futures

In order to achieve our longer term Directions 2025 goal, we have developed a staged approach to getting there.  Our strategy has involved identifying our strengths and enhancing them further – we call it Monash Futures.

The areas of focus outlined by Monash Futures include:

  • the ability to attract, recruit and retain the world's best talent in both the academic and professional staff cohorts
  • ensuring we have the reputation to attract the best students – to make Monash their university of first choice
  • supporting research to achieve the impact that will make a visible difference
  • ensuring our internal systems are able to support and promote excellence in service delivery.
