Monash University is its people.
They are people who want to change their own lives so they can help change their communities for the better.
This desire to have a genuine, beneficial impact is the foundation of the Monash experience. And it always has been.
What we have become
Monash was established in 1958 and welcomed its first students in 1961.
What we are today is a product of our proud history. We have stayed true to the ideas and philosophies that made us such a trendsetter and we owe a lot to those who have come before us.
A youthful university
Making a difference takes energy and idealism.
Our youthful outlook is reflected in everything we do, and supports our belief that we can make a difference.
We aren't mired in cynicism, tradition or convention. We are progressive, flexible and optimistic.
An optimistic university
We have seen the good achieved by Monash people. We are encouraged by their successes and the role we have played in them.
We believe the communities we are a part of are full of opportunities and hope, and that we can help bring these hopes to fruition. We approach all challenges with optimism. We see a brighter future as something that is more than possible - it is something we are responsible for creating.
A focused university
We know what is important and we are determined to make a difference. Each of our actions is judged by its capacity to help people achieve this.
From collaborative research opportunities, to building community relationships, our focus is always on how we can empower our people to make a positive impact on the world.
A highly ambitious university
Our goals lie beyond personal milestones.
We know the incredible impact that can be made when the right will is applied by the right people. We want our people to fulfill their greatest potential and to achieve lofty goals. And we don't shy away from the hard work, determination and big thinking needed to achieve them.
An open and approachable university
We believe in shared endeavours, working together towards common goals.
We also know genuine collaboration can only result when all parties are open and honest with each other.
We constantly work to create an environment where such endeavours are possible. We open our doors to anyone who is prepared to work hard to make a difference.
What we believe in
We believe the best way to help our people meet the challenges they face is to provide a supportive environment. An environment that identifies and nurtures talent - and turns that talent into ability.
Ours is an environment that recognises great achievement and inspires people to become the change their community needs.
Our motto Ancora Imparo ("I am still learning") reminds us that the search for knowledge never ends.
We value continual improvement - we strive to progress faster than the norm. We are fired with a restless ambition that pushes us to do things better, to set new benchmarks and to break new ground.
We seek to continually push ourselves, to ensure our next generation is better than we are. We are determined to remain amongst the world's best.
We believe thoughts alone will not change the world. We value action, and see our actions as proof of our ideas.
In order for our students and staff to positively impact their communities and the world, we must equip them and inspire them - so they can be agents of change.
Shared ambitions move us forward, faster. The more relevant, useful and powerful connections we can make - the greater our impact will be.
We realise the power of expertise - we want to connect the right people to the right challenges.
The ideas we develop today will bring about the change we need tomorrow. With this in mind we judge our ideas by a simple benchmark: "Will it help us make a difference?"
We support each other to reach above and beyond the ordinary or expected and we encourage a visionary approach to education and research.
