Professor Tyrone Pretorius - Pro Vice-Chancellor (Monash South Africa)

As Pro Vice-Chancellor (Monash South Africa), Professor Tyrone Pretorius is responsible for:

  • helping Monash South Africa further embrace its role in the development of South African society
  • developing the campus into a world-class teaching and research facility

Professional background

Professor Pretorius has an outstanding record of academic leadership and a strong background in higher education management.

Before commencing as Pro Vice-Chancellor (Monash South Africa) in 2005, he was Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) at the University of the Western Cape (UWC). He also spent 10 years as Dean of Community and Health Sciences at UWC.

Academic interests

Professor Pretorius has Doctorates from UWC (South Africa) and the University of the Orange Free State (South Africa), as well as a post-Doctoral Fellowship from Yale University (US).

He has a background in psychology and has been recognised by the Psychology Society of South Africa for his contribution to the field.

He remains an active researcher, is a current statistics editor of the South African Journal of Psychology and has published extensively in the fields of coping, stress, statistics and research methodology
