Professor Helen Bartlett is responsible for the Monash Malaysia campus located at Bandar Sunway, Selangor. Her vision is for the campus to be the premier private research-intensive university in South East Asia, contributing to the Malaysian nation and to the region.
As Pro Vice-Chancellor (Malaysia), her responsibilities include:
- managing and coordinating ongoing academic development
- line management for academic and administrative staff
- general supervision of arrangements for instruction, administration, day-to-day affairs, welfare and discipline
Professional background
Prior to commencing her current position in 2013, Professor Bartlett was Pro Vice-Chancellor and President (Gippsland campus). She is a member of the University’s Senior Management Team.
Professor Bartlett has had an international career in higher education with extensive senior leadership experience in health and social sciences at universities in the United Kingdom, Hong Kong and Australia.
Prior to working with Monash, Professor Bartlett was the Foundation Director of the Australasian Centre on Ageing at the University of Queensland. She has also held senior academic appointments involving research capacity building at Curtin University’s School of Nursing, Hong Kong Polytechnic University’s Department of Health Sciences and Oxford Brookes University’s School of Health Care, where she was the Foundation Director of the Centre for Health Care Research and Development, and the Oxford Dementia Centre.
Academic interests
Professor Bartlett has a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, a Master of Science in Public Policy and a Doctorate in Social Policy.
She has an international research record in gerontology, with a particular focus on healthy ageing and community care. During her career, Professor Bartlett has been awarded ARC and NHMRC project and program grants and state and federal government consultancies. She has published widely – including several books – and supervised over 35 higher research degree students.
Professor Bartlett remains actively involved in national capacity-building for ageing research. In addition to directing the Australian Emerging Researchers in Ageing initiative, she established the Ageing and Lifecourse research group at Monash University Gippsland and continues to write extensively on issues regarding population ageing in Australia and internationally.
Throughout her career, Professor Bartlett has built a reputation for developing mutually beneficial partnerships between universities, governments, industry and the wider community, and is passionate about improving participation rates in higher education.
