Professor John Sheridan - President of the Academic Board

Professor John Sheridan is President of the Academic Board of Monash University, which is responsible for oversight of the University's academic affairs. Its main role is to maintain the University's high standards in teaching and research.

Professional background

Professor Sheridan has a Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) from the University of Melbourne, a Master of Engineering Science and a PhD in natural convection in porous media from Monash University. He has held the discipline chair of Professor of Fluid Mechanics at Monash University since 2000 and was Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering between 2001 and 2006. He has been Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Engineering since 1999.

Professor Sheridan has served on many Monash University committees and has been a member of a number of review committees including the Still Learning review of the University. He has played an active role in several external organisations related to his academic disciplines and is an industry consultant.

Academic interests

In addition to his Academic Board duties, Professor Sheridan:

  • is currently supervising 15 PhD students (and has supervised 22 PhD students to completion)
  • has received more than 20 competitive research grants
  • has a significant number of refereed publications
  • is an active researcher.

His research interests include:

  • bluff-body aerodynamics
  • wake stability and control
  • wake-wave interactions
  • vehicle aerodynamics
  • flow-induced vibration
  • wind turbine aerodynamics
  • cycling aerodynamics.
