Early life and academic achievements

John Monash was born on 27 June 1865 in West Melbourne of German-Polish Jewish parents.

As a child, he attended St Stephen's Church of England School in Richmond, Melbourne, for three years. Following this, the family moved to Jerilderie, New South Wales where Monash attended the local public school

Monash's academic abilities were noted and when his mother returned to Melbourne with the children, he was enrolled in Scotch College. In his final year, Monash was dux in mathematics and modern languages and equal dux of the school.

He entered the University of Melbourne at the age of 16 but after two years was forced to suspend his Arts studies because of financial hardship.

Eventually he returned to study, and by the age of 30 was qualified as a municipal surveyor, an engineer of water supply and a patent attorney and also had a range of qualifications, including a Bachelor of Arts (Melb), Doctor of Laws (Melb), Doctor of Engineering (Melb), Doctor of Civil Law (Oxford) and Doctor of Laws (Cambridge).
